Antique Bakshaish Rug 43401

Bakshaish Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century - While the weaver wool, and palette of this magnificent carpet show that it is Bakshaish, its design is exceptional among carpets of this type. More reminiscent of a Serapi or perhaps a Farahan, the field has a monumental medallion design with cornerpieces, all filled with arabesque vinescroll ornamentation. The 'turtle' vinescroll border is beautifully rendered on a finer scale that contrasts nicely with the monumentality of the field. Despite the eclectic aspect of the design, the crisp, animated drawing and beautiful coloration are classic Bakshaish.
