Antique East Turkestan Khotan (Hotan) Carpets with Silk Road Beauty & Modern Decorating Power
Khotan rugs—woven in the Hotan/Khotan region of East Turkestan (Xinjiang) along the historic Silk Road—are prized for quiet, sophisticated palettes, confident borders, and graphic motifs that feel equally at home in classic and contemporary interiors.
If you want an antique rug that reads collected, calm, and architectural, Khotan is one of the smartest choices you can make. These Silk Road carpets were born at a cultural crossroads, and you can feel it in the design—clean geometry, balanced spacing, and motifs that are decorative without becoming busy.
At Nazmiyal, we love Khotans because they behave like a modern design element while still carrying real age and character. For origin-first browsing across the world, use our Rug Origins (Countries & Cities) hub.
Khotan rugs show a few recurring “families” that make shopping fast and intuitive:
Disc medallions: strong rhythm and an architectural “anchor” that reads from across the room.
Allover gul fields: continuous texture that decorates effortlessly and feels calm in open-plan spaces.
Pomegranate / vase themes: iconic Silk Road symbolism with collector-level presence when the drawing is strong.
How to Choose the Right Khotan Rug
Start by confirming scale with the Rug Size Guide, then choose the era feel that fits your room: browse our Antique Rugs hub for true historic pieces, compare character against Vintage Rugs, and if you want a cleaner contemporary look, explore Modern Rugs.
1) Start with size
For long spaces, Khotans shine as gallery formats and runners. Size correctly first—then palette and pattern become easy decisions.
2) Pick the “read”: medallion vs allover
Large disc medallions: focal rhythm and strong structure.
Allover gul fields: flexible decorating and calmer “quiet luxury.”
East Turkestan rugs are the broader umbrella; Khotan is one of the most recognizable families within it. If you want the calm, architectural lane, Khotan is often the move—especially when you want strong borders and airy fields.
Chinese rugs are a common cross-shop for palette and scale; Khotans tend to feel more geometric and border-driven. If you’re also comparing design language, classic Persian Rugs often read more curvilinear and “courtly,” while Khotan reads more graphic and spatial.

Where do Khotan (Hotan) rugs come from?
Khotan rugs come from the Khotan/Hotan region in East Turkestan (Xinjiang), a historic oasis area connected to Silk Road trade.

My wife and I are so pleased with the antique Uzbek Bokhara Rug purchased from the Nazmiyal Collection. Not only does the rug have a spectacular design, it also was very reasonably priced. The way it transforms our living room, reconciling the classic modern furniture with the 1913 Craftsman interior is remarkable.

I recently purchased a modern Kandinsky rug from Nazmiyal Auctions. It was just as described, and the director (Farhad) of the auctions had it sent to me quickly and safely. Payment was easy, the rug was reasonably priced, and I highly recommend Nazmiyal Auctions and Antique Rugs. Quality merchandise and first-class service.

Had a excellent experience buying a rug in Nazmiyal's 1/18/26 online auction. First, prior to the auction, viewing a number of lots at the 32nd St showroom (I had prepared a list from the online catalog). The staff were great to work with: helpful, knowledgable, honest, and flexible. Second, after placing an online bid and winning the desired item, arranging payment and pickup was simple and straightforward. Everything went seamlessly and the overall experience was educational and fun. Many thanks to Jason and his team.

Everyone at Naziyal is proffessional, especially Jason and Farhad.
They are knowledgeable, truthful, and true gentlemen. I have sold several rugs through them and will always go to them first, to buy or sell. The best in the business!
