Antique Turkish Rugs -- Antique Turkish, late nineteenth century While Turkish carpets of the late nineteenth century tend to derive from the designs of from classical Persian and Turkish forerunners, they rarely do so with such authenticity and elegance. Here an oval arabesque vinescroll medallion on a deep chocolate ground recalls the great masterpieces of Safavid Persian weaving, as do the vines, palmettes, and and sinuous cloudbands of the vibrant terracotta field. The sage green spandrels at the corners of the field recall the Persianizing designs of classic Turkish Ushak carpets. The angular, zig-zag vinescroll border provides something of a surprise with its contrast in design and color to the undulating classical rhythms of the field.
