Art Deco Rug, France, 19th Century - This charming antique French Deco carpet reinterprets the naturalistic floral repertoire of nineteenth century Savonnerie rugs within a new and simpler early modern aesthetic. A central medallion of leaves and flowers is enclosed by a leafy border, which repeats at the outermost edge. But virtually the whole carpet is an open field of red, punctuated only by thin concentric bands or outlines. Design is kept to a minimum, allowing the luscious coloration to carry the overall effect.
