Antique Tabriz, Persia, circa 1900. This stunning antique Tabriz has a design adapted from classical Persian Kerman ‘Vase Carpets.’ Richly detailed palmettes and arabesque vinescrolls undulate in allover symmetry across the cool tan ground, while a fine mesh of tiny flowers or ‘millefleurs’ swirl around the larger main forms. The main border is extraordinary. Instead of a running vinescroll, it utilizes a repeating series of trees or shrubs derived from Persian pictorial garden carpets, but set off against the same tan ground of the field. Minor borders with pale aubergine grounds provide the requisite framing affect between the field and main border, whose design texture harmonizes so perfectly with the central ‘Vase’ design.
