Frequently Asked Questions

Raj is the traditional measurement used to describe the fineness of a Tabriz rug. It refers to the number of knots counted across approximately seven centimetres of the rug's width, read from the back, and the grades most often quoted are 40, 50, 60 and 70 raj. A higher raj count allows finer detail, but it does not determine quality or value by itself.
It is a small rosette set inside a diamond and framed by curving leaves that resemble fish circling a pond. Mahi is Persian for fish, and Herati refers to the city of Herat, generally associated with the historical origin of the pattern. It appears as an allover field, inside a medallion, or in the borders.
An antique Tabriz rug is generally approximately 100 years old or older and was woven in Tabriz or its surrounding weaving region. Age should be evaluated together with construction, materials, dyes, wear and condition rather than by the label alone.
Indo-Tabriz rugs are woven in India using Tabriz-inspired designs. They can look convincing from the front, so the answer is in the structure: knot type, foundation materials, wefting, ends, sides, handle and the consistency of the weave from end to end. Attribution rests on the build, not on the design name.
Value depends on age, raj, materials, the coherence of the drawing, dyes, condition, scale, restoration, workshop attribution and provenance. Age or knot count alone does not establish value.
Yes, when the work is done by specialists who understand Persian workshop construction. Prioritise structural stabilisation of ends, sides and foundation before any cosmetic work.
