Antique Khorassan carpet from Persia, circa 1900
A pointed polygonal medallion with serrated edges hovers amidst the field of this sumptuous antique Khorassan, capped by two grand ogival finials with similar edging. Scalloped cornerpieces create a kind of secondary oval outer medallion form. Vinescroll and palmette borders frame the entire composition. There is a remarkable unity to the carpet owing to the use of consistent ornamental detail throughout, as well as to a consistent range of soft, complementary colors - blues, golds, and mauve tans. As a result the piece works as a first-rate decorative carpet.
