Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Checkers II” Textile, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th CenturyVerner Panton attended the Royal Danish Academy of Art and graduated in 1951. He would spend the first two years of his career creating Danish Modern furniture at the Arne Jacobsen architectural firm. However, he would soon launch his own design firm and would go on to become one of the most iconic designers of the 1960s and 1970s. This is a textile created in 1969 for his Décor I collection. The textile is called “Checkers II.”

Panton began his career learning the conventions of modern design. At that time, the focus in this field was on natural woods and Danish modern pieces that had an organic feel with simple lines. Panton was fascinated with expanding into work using recently developed plastics and foam. He created his textiles to complement his lines of modern furniture, such as the iconic S chair that was first created in 1960 and was still being produced into the late 1990s. His textiles were meant to add to the visual impact of the entire room ensemble.

The design techniques used by Panton were used to create the look of three-dimensional space on a flat surface. Checkers II was created using different saturation levels of pinks to create a dynamic piece that is perfect for modern interiors. Today, Panton’s work has experienced new popularity, and it is being used to create dynamic accents in minimalist and Swedish Modern designs.

Pinks are a color trend that is featured on many contemporary design blogs and in popular magazines. This piece of fabric is lively and intense. It could add a touch of drama to a room with Millennial Pink or in a more neutral color palette. This is a beautiful piece of particular interest to the midcentury modern collector and for creating a streamlined, modern interior.
