Vintage Persian Gabbeh Tribal Geometric Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
Three columns divide the ivory field. The outer two are plain brown diamonds, five to a side, outlined in a thin red line and filled with nothing at all. Between them runs a narrower column of small ornate figures in red, navy, gold and ivory — winged, symmetrical, and far more finely drawn than anything flanking them.
Setting the decoration in the middle and leaving the sides bare is a deliberate order of precedence, and it works: the eye goes straight down the centre and only afterwards registers the brown shapes holding it in place. Small curved marks drift along both outer edges, and two tiny animals stand at the foot.
At 3 ft 9 in by 6 ft 3 in the pale ivory ground keeps it light despite the detail, and it falls within the 4 x 6 size rugs. Accomplished tribal rug drawing. Price is available on request, and the three-column plan can be widened as a custom rug.
