Vibrantly Hued Vintage Persian Geometric Gabbeh Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
Dozens of thin horizontal lines fill the field, closer to pinstripe than to banding — grey-blue against red, with ivory and brown cutting in every so often. The spacing tightens and loosens as the rows climb. Near the foot the lines break off and a small panel takes over, holding two ivory blocks and a scatter of colour.
Fineness is the whole effect. At this scale the stripes half-blend from standing height and separate again up close, which is a difficult thing to get right when every line is a single pass of the weft. The border refuses to match it: a large ivory and brown zigzag runs down both sides at ten times the scale of anything in the field.
At 3 ft 2 in by 5 ft 5 in it belongs with the small rugs, and the red keeps it warm without shouting. Careful geometric rug work. Price is available on request, with larger versions available as a custom rug.
