Beautiful Vintage Persian Gabbeh Rug with Lion Design, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
A single amber lion stands in profile across a deep aubergine field, tail curled up and over its back. The body is drawn flat in gold, with mane, ribs and haunches picked out in fine dark hatching and one pale eye set into the muzzle. The plum ground shifts tone gently from one band to the next.
Pictorial weavings like this sit apart from the geometric majority of the tribal rug tradition: one figure, generously scaled, with nothing else competing for the field. The drawing is confident and unfussy, closer to a bold graphic than to a study from life.
At 3 ft 3 in by 5 ft 5 in this is a small rug — right for an entry, a bedside, or hanging as a panel where the lion reads at eye level. Our rug size guide helps place a piece at this scale. Offered at price upon request; a custom rug can be commissioned in a larger format.
