Rust-Colored Vintage Persian Tribal Gabbeh Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
A single ivory hexagon takes up nearly the whole field, stepped at the edges in navy, with a smaller navy diamond and a green heart at its centre. The rust ground survives only as a margin around it. Both are covered in small figures — birds, animals, people, combs — dozens of them, with a few larger forms standing out in the rust margin at the corners.
The figures are the record of the weaving. They are not placed to a plan: they cluster where there was room and thin out where there was not, and several are drawn twice at different sizes. That is the tribal habit — the structure is settled first and the population accumulates as the work goes.
At 3 ft 10 in by 5 ft 3 in it is a small rug with a great deal to look at, and the warm rust reads gently rather than loudly. Price is available on request, and the medallion can be redrawn at any size as a custom rug.
