Earth-Tone Vintage Persian Tribal Geometric Gabbeh Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage – The three medallions down the center are never filled in. Each is drawn as a contour only and made up of a stack of thin lines in red, turquoise, ivory, and dark brown. The camel ground runs straight through where the color would normally sit. Four small plant-like figures stand at the sides. Rather than a traditional border, a red zigzag runs the length of both edges.
Leaving the shapes open is a strategic design choice. A few rows of colored knots carry a design that would otherwise take thousands. An unexpected shock of turquoise appears nowhere except those outlines. The difference in tone serves as a welcome interruption to the otherwise warm and neutral tones of the rug. Everything around it is undyed fleece, banded and drifting, so the geometric drawing floats free of any ground color.
At 3 ft 6 in by 5 ft it is compact and quiet, warm-toned without being loud, with a characteristic tribal rug composition. The outline design can be scaled for a larger room as a custom rug.
