Magnificent and Extremely Fine Antique Persian Petag Tabriz Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: Persian Rug, Circa Date: 1920 – This vibrant Persian rug is all about the convergence of design and color.  The happy and crisp jewel tone rug colors form the perfect complimentary color scheme for this magnificent piece that is based on the tribal Shield design that we normally associate with antique Caucasian rugs.

The large scale tribal shield design of this antique Persian Tabriz rug has horizontal symmetry but not vertical. These oversized bold motifs boast a beautiful array of happy colors and really pop against the deep midnight blue color background.

The flowers in this spectacular Persian Petag Tabriz rug are placed in such a way that they appears to continue beyond the borders of this exciting tribal design rug. The geometric border uses color shifting to create a beautiful frame that is pleasing and balances beautifully with the boldness of the body of the room size rug.

For those who may not be familiar with the “Petag” rugs,  the name comes from the German Petag company which is the abbreviation of “Persische Teppich AG”. This german company was established in 1911 in Berlin Germany.

At the helm of this new company was Mr. Heinrich Jacoby, who opened a sizable Persian carpet weaving factory in the Persian city of Tabriz (which is located in Northwest Persia / modern day country of Iran). The concept behind the formation of the company was to combat the over commercialization and lower production qualities of Persian rugs during that time period. The main drop in production quality was a response by the manufacturers to the increasing western market demands for Oriental rugs at lower price points.

Combining iconic 16th – 17th century rug designs with higher grade wool, finer weaving qualities and handmade vegetable rug dyes, the results were spectacular. The Petag rugs that feature old and iconic designs with a new and upbeat twist are simply magnificent.

Sadly, during the 1940’s, the Petag workshop closed its doors. That said, many of the Petag carpets are still in existence today – a testament to the skill of the weavers who created these art level rug. The Persian Petag rugs can easily be recognized as they used the Chintamani design that has been knotted into each and every rug they created (see lower right corner, of the inner coral colored guard border, of this piece, to see the signature) .
