The grid is ruled in blue, and that is the surprise — almost everything it encloses is warm. Inside the cells sit orange, brick, ivory, olive and near-black, and a good number of them are not plain at all but carry a small drawn mark: a comb, a cross, a figure small enough to miss.
The cells are not the same size either. They widen and narrow as the rows climb and the blue lines bend to follow, so what looks at first like a ruled grid turns out to have been drawn by eye. It is that drift, plus the marks hidden in the cells, that rewards standing over it.
At 3 ft 3 in by 4 ft 10 in it is one of the small rugs, strong enough in red and orange to hold a hallway or sit at the foot of a bed. Price is available on request, and the grid can be run to a larger floor as a custom rug.
