Charming Vintage Persian Gabbeh Deer Pattern Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
Four deer, two above and two below, each drawn in near-black with branching antlers and a row of pale rosettes along the flank. None of the four is quite the same shape as another. A band of small coloured blocks runs between the two registers, and more of the same striping closes the top and bottom edges.
The ground is doing as much as the deer. It drifts in wide horizontal bands from oatmeal to a warmer tan and back, the mark of the fleece changing batch to batch, and because the figures sit on open ground with nothing else competing, that drift becomes the whole background of the rug.
At 2 ft 7 in by 3 ft 7 in it is one of the smallest small rugs here — a doorway, a bedside, or a wall, since figures this clear hang well. Price is available on request, and the deer can be redrawn at any scale as a custom rug.
