Polychrome Silk and Gilt-Metal Embroidered Banner, Country of Origin: Italian, Circa Date: Early 18th Century –

Exquisite ecclesiastical banner of off-white ribbed silk, richly embroidered in polychrome silks and flat gilt-metal strips of varied textures, forming scrolling floral, fruit, and ribbon motifs. Worked across two loom widths joined at center, the embroidery presents a finely balanced mirror-symmetrical composition characteristic of early 18th-century Italian liturgical textiles.

An applied border of gilt-metal lace frames the design; the upper edge displays puckering, suggesting the textile was originally gathered or suspended — possibly once serving as the terminal panel of an altar frontal. Collectors drawn to related ecclesiastical works may also wish to explore our holdings of European rugs and decorative textiles from this era.

Dimensions: 35.5 x 33.5 inches (90 x 85 cm).

Condition: Light discoloration and general wear to lace trim; scattered tarnish to metal threads; minor stains measuring approximately 0.25–0.75 in.; several small holes behind the embroidery up to 0.75 in.; few pulled threads; minor shattering at edges. Overall good condition for its age, retaining exceptional color, texture, and surface integrity. For deeper context on the floral and ribbon symbolism that defines this composition, our guide to rug motifs and symbols provides valuable background.
