Beautiful and Unique Silk Antique Persian Suzani Textile, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900
The ground is plain black, and every inch of pattern is embroidered onto it in silk. The composition is concentric: a small rosette at the dead centre, a ring of dense flowers around it, then a square band, then a wider square of the same flowers again.
What makes it work is the black left showing. The bare ground is used as a drawn element — two rings and a pair of square bands of nothing at all — so the embroidery reads as separate registers rather than as one crowded surface. Only a fraction of the cloth stays uncovered, and all of it is placed.
At 5 ft 10 in square it is one of the square rugs, and a textile of this kind hangs as readily as it lies. Price is available on request, and our custom rug service can work to a palette like this one at another size.
