The pomegranate design of the carpet is fully symmetrical both vertically and horizontally giving it a pleasant and organized look. Since the city Khotan was one of the major stops along the old Silk Road, East Turkestan rugs have a mixture of design influences that range from both the more Asian and Chinese inspired through Persian and even Turkish designs.
This beautiful antique Oriental rug has a layout that is divided into two main sections. The first section is comprised of the main light blue with taupe colored pomegranate designs of the field and the second is the beautiful surrounding bands that make up the border.
The light blue field at the center of the antique Khotan rug functions like a background to the light taupe colored stylized pomegranate shaped forms. The simplified pomegranate plant design motifs have several twig like branches with delicate leaves and exquisite pomegranate fruit attached to the ends. Symbolism being important in such stylized works, the pomegranates are an important symbol in Central Asia representing prosperity and fertility.
The outer perimeter of the light blue colored pomegranate design antique Khotan rug is embellished with several brown bands composed of intricate primitive geometric shapes and abstract tribal rug design patterns. Since this pomegranate design antique Khotan rug was woven by hand, there are some interesting quirks visible in those outer bands making this piece a truly unique work of folk art.
