Antique Kuba Rug, Caucasus, Late 19th Century - Woven in the late 19th century, this antique rug is decorated with a vast collection of symbolic motifs used throughout the Caucasus and the Asian Steppe. Running dog borders are often found in rugs from Kuba. However, this piece features a unique offset composition and an exceptionally clear color palette, including ivory, red, oxidized blue, green and muted brown. Traditional guardbands decorated with delicate floral motifs and poppy red accents accentuate influences from Eastern Europe and countries to the north. S-shaped hooks and symbolic lozenges set on a prominent axis decorate the field along with cobra-like scorpion motifs for protection against the venom of this deadly creature. Secondary medallions decorated with heart-shaped fretwork details lend a subtle Eastern appearance to this classic rug from Kuba.
