Vintage Deco French Rug 2858
Art Deco Rug, France, circa 1935 - This classically Art Deco rug treads the line between decorative abstraction and representation. Many of the forms in the field seem to depict landscape elements- mountains, rivers, sun and clouds- but it is difficult to be sure. It all works just as well as free-form design or pattern, carefully coordinated with effective color contrasts and juxtapositions. The border of arches and volutes works similarly, as pattern or as a stylized rendering of architectural form. Though rendered in the medium of decorative textile, this piece is nonetheless a first-rate modern painting.
