Antique French Carpets -- Antique Aubusson, France, nineteenth centuryReminiscent of a ceiling at Versailles, a classic cameo medallion filled with a bouquet of realistically rendered roses sits within a grand frame of moldings and cartouches on this magnificent antique Aubusson. Classically derived acanthus vines and rococo scrolls embellish the frame or border at various points, enclosed by an outer border of helical leaves. Aubussons often have an architectural quality about them, but rarely do they achieve the monumental grandeur of this carpet, enhanced, no doubt, by the soft, tone-on-tone coloration.
