This vibrant and richly decorated rug from Khotan features a rustic, stacked medallion pattern flanked by auspicious motifs and protection symbols.

Antique Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Late 19th Century – This beautifully composed antique Oriental rug — an antique Khotan piece woven in East Turkestan toward the end of the nineteenth century — is replete with cultural, artistic and historical significance, making it not only a gorgeous decorative piece, but also something of a relic from a specific place and a specific point in time. This stunning, vibrant rug features ancient symbols found throughout the carpet-producing world. Bereket variations, double ram’s horn motifs and burdock protection symbols decorate the luminous, oxidized yellow field. Inky, midnight blue inner borders and colorful outer borders decorated with revolving floral block pattern provide a strong frame that balances the vibrant, densely patterned field. All in all, this rug is a beautiful piece that is also an example of the cultural significance of these rugs to the master craftsmen and societies that were responsible for their production.
