Vintage Persian Gabbeh Thunder Pattern Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
Five thin zigzag lines run from top to bottom, widely spaced, each a single row of knots in red and ivory. Everything between them is bare — an undyed fleece, mottled and flecked with charcoal. There is no border at all, only a narrow red line finishing the edge.
The palette is the departure. Almost every rug of this kind is built on cream or on hot red, and this one keeps the natural brown of the wool — warm but very nearly colorless, with the red doing all the work. Five lines across three feet is also very little pattern, and the restraint reads as modern though nothing about the making is.
At 3 ft by 5 ft 10 in it is narrow and long, and among the small rugs it is the one to reach for where a busier pattern would crowd the floor. Price is available on request, and the spacing can be redrawn at any width as a custom rug.
