Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Kreis” Textile, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th Century – The calming greens and gradient circles of this classic textile by Verner Panton are perfect for any midcentury collection. Verner Panton is a designer who defined interior style trends of the 1960s and 1970s. The late 1960s and early 1970s would become known as the Panton Era. This fabric was created for his Décor I collection and is called Kreis or Circles I.

Panton began his design career working under the direction of the Arne Jacobsen design firm in the early 1950s. The firm specialized in classic Danish Modern design using organic woods and metal. Panton became fascinated with the potential that new plastics and other materials had to offer. He left the Arne Jacobsen firm so that he could pursue his own unique design concepts.

Panton’s work used color to accentuate basic geometric forms. His arrangement of color makes the forms appear to be three-dimensional. The reversal of the gradient on this piece makes some of the circles appear larger than others. It also makes them appear to stand out from the flat surface or recede into it. This brings the textile to life and gives it a dimensional effect.

Panton’s work with color was the result of consultation in the field of psychology about the psychological effect of color on human mood. His gallery exhibits used color and form to create a fantasy world and futuristic landscape within the space. When he created his Décor I collection in 1969, his intention was to be able to allow the average person to have the same experience.

This textile was part of the Décor I collection and was used to create complementary accessories and window treatments. The green has a calming, organic feel, and its simple design is fresh and contemporary. It is an essential for the midcentury collector or to add color in a modern, minimalist design.
