Vintage Scandinavian Verner Panton “Kreis” Textile, Country Of Origin: Scandinavia, Circa Date: Mid 20th CenturyVerner Panton is an iconic midcentury modern artist who is known for his iconic contemporary designs that place emphasis on form and function. His designs became popular in the 1960s and 1970s, and they have recently experienced a resurgence in popularity. They are the perfect accent for design styles that range from minimalist to Scandinavian Modern.

Panton was most widely known for creating rooms the immersed the visitor in a fantasy world of form and color. The early part of his career was influenced by contemporary Danish modern design during his employment for the Danish architecture firm Arne Jacobsen. While many modern designers of the time worked with natural materials, such as wood and metal, Panton was drawn to work with newly developed plastics, foam, and synthetics. His textiles were made to complement his furniture and accessory designs that emphasized form and function.

This textile is called Kreis. It is from the Circles I collection, which was created in 1969. By the late 1960s, Panton’ s work was at the peak of its lively, psychedelic phase for which his work is best known. Over his career, he created more than 400 textile designs. They were used to create an interior world that was meant to have a deep emotional impact on the visitor. His fabrics were used for ceiling to floor curtains, accent pillows, and other small items in the space.

This fabric uses eight different shades of green arranged to create a three-dimensional effect. The circles seem to either project from or recede into the flat space. This is a generous textile from an iconic midcentury modern designer. It would be the perfect addition to an interior design that features clean lines and simple shapes. Panton Era textiles have become highly collectible recently, and this is the perfect piece for a retro or vintage-inspired room.
