The eye is drawn immediately to the brilliant coral-red medallion at the center of this antique Persian Tabriz rug. Built from tightly nested rings of curving ornament, small blossoms and contrasting blue, ivory and dark accents, it stands sharply against the deep green field. A circle of smaller cartouche-like forms surrounds the centerpiece, extending the central medallion design outward before it dissolves into the densely worked field.
Beyond this focal area, the scale of the rug allows an extraordinary network of vines, palmettes and compact flowers to spread across the green ground. Small red blossoms recur almost continuously, joined by larger scrolling forms that establish symmetry without leaving large areas of empty field. Coral passages at the upper and lower corners echo the center, creating a strong relationship between the medallion and the extremities of the composition.
The border operates almost as a second design in its own right. Against a saturated red ground, alternating dark cartouches and rounded green medallions repeat around the perimeter, each filled with intricate botanical details.
