Softly Toned Antique Persian Bakshaish Gallery-Size Rug (Dated 1304), Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1888

The field has faded to a soft blue-green, and it moves constantly — pass to pass it lifts toward sand and drops back again. Over it runs a fine allover pattern of small rosettes and palmettes in ivory, coral and pale blue, drawn small enough that the field reads first and the pattern second.

The border does the opposite. A terracotta ground carries one bold ivory vine, undulating the length of the rug at several times the scale of anything inside it. Setting a large frame against a quiet field is what gives a piece this long its structure — without it the field would simply run on.

At 5 ft 10 in by 16 ft 7 in this is a gallery rug, made for a corridor or a long room where it will be walked beside rather than seen whole. Price is available on request, and the pattern can be rewoven to another length as a custom rug.
