Antique Persian Kilim Rug, Persia, Early 20th Century – Boldly executed, the lines accentuated by the contrast of vibrant gold against variegated shades of grey. The red geometric motif in the center of the kilim, woven in the traditional eight-sided goz or eye style, contains a black square that continues the theme of contrasts and creates a focal point for the carpet.
The borders of the carpet repeat the saw-tooth pattern of the main panel. Yellow zigzags contrast with the dark background. The zigzag motif represents running water, a stylistic rendering often seen in kilim borders. Bands of red embellished with rows of small repeating motifs bracket the yellow and grey. The edges at each end are interwoven using a weft-float technique with white, black and red threads, creating a feeling of depth and texture.
