Antique Swedish Tapestry by Thora Kulle, Country Of Origin: Swedish, Circa Date: Late 19th Century – This exquisite antique Swedish tapestry, by Thora Kulle, showcases a lavishly appointed scene that illustrates part of a mythical saga. The script in Swedish reads “Och Necken så sin sorg på harpan slår ” Which is roughly translated in English to “And the Water-spirit strikes his harp with sorrow”. The beautifully detailed composition centers around a golden-haired figure plucking a gilded harp. The divine harp-bearing messenger sits in a decorative fairy boat guided by shapely nymphs with long flowing hair. Graceful water lilies and lithe irises decorate the dynamic foreground that extends the perceived distance between the beautifully drawn figures and the roiling poly-chromatic waters. The decorative background displays a recumbent father figure, celestial animals and a series of Gothic six-pointed stars that cut into the scarlet border. This spectacular Swedish tapestry has an unconventional composition that invites viewers to experience a mythical universe of unique sagas that fit the archetypal hero myth.
