Breathtaking and Extremely Decorative Small Antique Tan and Baby Blue Khotan Rug, Country of Origin / Rug Type: East Turkestan, Circa Date: 1920

The eyes are initially pulled towards the three rounded emblems in the center. All three round circular elements feature a beautiful soft baby blue background which creates the perfect juxtaposition against the warm tan color of the field. Allowing the eyes to follow the three shapes vertically, one begins to notices the symbols and design shapes around them.  These mostly tribal floral motifs are sprinkled throughout the background in a truly organic and non traditional fashion. This truly unique approach gives the antique Oriental rug a feel of being part of the “outsiders” folk art movement.

The border lining the outside of the field of this tan and baby blue Khotan rug,  prominently features the same baby blue background as the emblems. The next main border features the same brown and blue that we see in the field, only this time, the blue is used as part of the design and as a result, we see less of it. The last narrow guard border is, again, comprised of the same baby blue and browns, but this time, the blues are only hinted and used as highlights or outlines. This is a fascinating approach to coloration and design. Here the weaver is taking us on a journey throughout the light blue skies and ends up bringing us back down to our earthy brown home.
