Antique English Wilton Rug, 1900 — This elaborate Wilton Rug displays a red field covered by a large, ornate black central medallion in the general shape of a Tudor-style floret, bordered on opposing ends by detailed designs in red, black, brown and gray resembling a family crest. Four irregularly shaped black decorative medallions surround this central feature. There are also four black spandrels in the corner, and a formal thick border in contrasting red and black utilizing a number of curving geometric shapes. The extent of the detail in this finely crafted rug appears quite exceptional; a variety of floral, animal and geometric designs populate the field. Two narrow beige guard borders contain intricate repeating motifs. The rug uses red, black, cream, brown, beige and gray colors. Wilton in Wessex in Southwest England became a center of weaving and carpet making after a the Ninth Earl of Pembroke invited skilled French weavers to settle there in 1741. Artisans in the area produced many elegant rugs. At the turn of the Twentieth a carpet factory was constructed in the community and it operated until 1995.
