Antique Khotan Area Rug, East Turkestan, Circa 1900 – Woven in the traditional elongated format, this antique carpet from Khotan features an outstanding variety of symbols and fretwork details influenced by cultures to the east and west. Three sets of distinct borders enclose the umber field and triple medallion pattern. Fretwork spandrels and secondary medallions featuring auspicious symbols dot the field. Masterful counter change details, including interlocking double ram’s horn motifs and bereket fragments resembling a bird’s foot, embellish the outlying medallions while geometric stars, which are one of the eternal and universal symbols of happiness, decorate the central medallion. Inner borders decorated with scrolling fretwork motifs, central borders featuring segmented rosettes and outer borders embellished with scrolling cloud motifs and sun rays continue the soothing earth-tone color scheme.
