Antique Israeli Bezalel Rug, Israel, circa First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a truly remarkable antique rug – an antique Bezalel carpet that was woven in Jerusalem, Israel during the early decades of the twentieth century. Featuring the muted color pallet and sophisticated designs that typify the finest Bezalel rugs, this charming example shows beautiful drawing and detail work throughout. The proportions and overall composition of this lovely Bezalel Israeli carpet are classical in inspiration. The borders consist of complementary inner and outer borders that surround a larger primary border. This primary border features an expressive pattern of sophisticated blossoming vine scroll elements. Within the field, an especially lovely pattern unfolds: here, a pattern of alternating rows of large circular figures populate a reddish brown field that is swirling with flowing vine scrolls and further floral elements. These rows of circles are positioned in such a way that only the rows of two are wholly visible; the rows of three are interrupted by the borders, which give the entire carpet a sense of dynamic energy. A beautifully woven example, this antique Israeli Bezalel carpet is an especially intriguing antique Oriental carpet.
