Persian Ziegler Sultanabad Rug, Persia, Late 19th Century – This regal, antique Persian rug created for the legendary Ziegler carpet firm features an ornate ivory medallion embellished with serrated edges and sweeping, ogival curves. Interwoven vine scrolls with strapwork proportions encircle the grand medallion linking the savage predators, artful piscine motifs and delicate avian emblems that embellish their individual ogival compartments. The exquisite scarlet field, which acts as a spandrel-like frame, contains an opulent arabesque decorated with stags and game animals. The grand main borders with their ornate reciprocating guard bands and crenellated barriers showcase a delightful botanical vine scroll pattern with flourishing tendrils, polychromatic saz leaves and elegant palmettes. The timeless triad of crimson, ivory and abrashed ultramarine blue is featured throughout the field with different hues emphasized in each well-proportioned area.
