Antique Turkish Sivas Rug, Turkey, c. 1920 – Here is a beautiful and elegant antique Oriental rug – an antique Sivas carpet, woven in Turkey during the second decade of the twentieth century. Extremely finely woven throughout, this alluring carpet, which measures a generous fifteen by twenty-four feet, is replete with precisely drawn line work and detail work. The generous borders featuring a classical pattern of interlacing bands full of floral detail work. Blue and brownish red, each of these bands carries a color found throughout the carpet, beautifully integrating the borders into the remainder of the composition. Delicate corner pieces stand within the borders, out from which unfolds a delightful series of details – flowering vine scrolls, elegantly undulating against the pale brown field, flowing into one another. The contrast between the blue of the detail work – occasionally broken up with red – against the soft brown enhance both colors. A beautifully woven carpet, this Sivas carpet is an exceptional composition.
