Elegant and Ornate Oversized Antique Persian Kerman Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1880
Repeated vertical bands give this antique Persian Kerman rug an unusually architectural sense of order. Instead of concentrating ornament around a single centerpiece, the field is divided into stacked registers of large palmettes, curving botanical forms and sharply outlined compartments. Their repetition produces an elaborate allover design in which symmetry is established across the entire surface rather than through one dominant medallion.
The strongest interruption occurs through the middle, where a horizontal row of large rosette-like forms creates a distinct visual axis across the rug. Above and below it, elongated red, coral and burgundy motifs repeat against a warm ivory ground, surrounded by finer vines, leaves and smaller blossoms. The abundance of floral ornament is dense, yet the larger repeating shapes remain easy to follow because their darker outlines separate them from the finer drawing around them.
Multiple narrow borders reinforce the field’s structured character. Floral bands in deeper brown, muted red and soft green form successive frames around the lighter interior, with smaller repeating details becoming progressively tighter toward the perimeter.
