Colorful Grid-Patterned Vintage Persian Gabbeh Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
A checkerboard fills the field edge to edge — cream, crimson, chocolate, grey and dark aubergine — in rows that never quite line up. Every few cells an orange square breaks through, streaked and far brighter than anything near it. The squares vary in width and depth, so the grid leans and drifts as it climbs.
No two squares are the same size and no row runs quite straight, and those small irregularities become the rhythm the eye actually follows. Sawtooth bands in ivory and olive frame the field on all four sides. This is tribal rug work using the plainest geometric rug device there is — a grid — and getting movement out of it.
At 4 ft 1 in by 6 ft 2 in it belongs with the 4 x 6 size rugs — a bedside, an entry, or the floor under a small seating group. Price is available on request, and the same palette can be scaled up as a custom rug.
