Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Early 20th Century – This superb antique Khotan rug displays a beautiful variety of traditional motifs rendered in a low-contrast palette of blue, walnut brown and platinum. In typical Khotan fashion, the elongated field displays a grand octofoil medallion surrounded by small-scale emblems and ethereal spandrels. Subtly colored decorations placed in a perfectly symmetric composition fill the delicate platinum ground while retaining an airy sophistication. The subtle cool-tone palette of decorator’s blues and grays gives the classical motifs a sense of elegance and refinement. Reciprocating double-scroll guard bands along with main borders featuring double ruyi clouds and polychrome sunrays encircle the decorative field while emphasizing the importance of traditional motifs in Khotan’s iconic designs.
