Antique Persian Malayer Rug, Persia, Circa: Turn of the 20th Century – Here is an exciting and classically composed antique rug – an antique Persian Malayer carpet that was handwoven in Persia around the turn of the twentieth century. Characterized by a comely pallet and a distinct, appealing design, this antique Malayer is an excellent example of an important and widely-admired Persia rug style. First, an intriguing series of borders surrounds the perimeter of the carpet, heavily decorated with a repeating pattern of stylized flowers and vases. Detail work is rendered in shades of dark brown against a background hue of pale gold. Within the field, outsized floral details take up a majority of the space, leaving only small patches where the sumptuous blue tone of the background peaks through. These large floral details, woven in pale gold and brown, contrast intensely with the blue hue of the background, but perfectly carry on the aesthetic of the borders. This clever design gives the entire carpet a deep sense of unity and continuity that enhances its already considerable appeal.
