Vintage Swedish Double-Sided Kilim, Origin: Sweden, Circa: Mid-20th Century – Here is a delightful vintage carpet – a Swedish kilim that was woven in Scandinavia during the middle years of the twentieth century. An exciting double-sided work, this vintage carpet beautifully showcases some of the finer points of mid-century Scandinavian rug weaving. The pallet is simple: ivory and blue on one side, blue and white on the other. The composition is also simple, at least superficially: each side of the carpet features a bare field that is surrounded by a pair of processions of geometric figures, with the inner procession featuring small, simple geometric details and the outer procession featuring larger, concentric geometric details.

The side with the unadorned ivory field is surrounded by a perimeter of blue, and ivory bands at the top and bottom. The other side is surrounded by a border of white, into which the initials “UC” are woven, near the lower right corner. The coming together of the traditional rug format (a border and field dichotomy) with a distinctly modern design is a defining characteristic of mid-century design, and it is beautifully on display in this lovely Swedish rug.
