Beautifully Patterned Vintage Persian Bakhtiari Area Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: Vintage
The ground is a deep crimson and almost none of it is left empty: a lattice of diamonds runs across the field, each one holding a large palmette in petrol blue or ivory, with small forest-green rosettes filling the gaps between. It is a dark rug — more than half the surface sits in the deep end of the palette.
The drawing is tribal in manner: every leaf and blossom is squared off at the edges, nothing is rounded, and no two compartments are filled quite the same way. The border abandons the red altogether — an ivory ground carrying red diamonds with blue and green rosettes set inside them.
At 12 ft 5 in by 14 ft 2 in it runs close to square and falls in the 12 x 15 size range, a carpet for a large room where the furniture sits well inside the edges. The lattice can be taken to a room-filling scale as a custom rug.
