Beautiful Pair of Antique Chinese Runner Rugs, Country of Origin: China, Circa Date: 1920
Both runners carry the same design: a deep indigo ground scattered with small round rosettes in tan and gold, set three across and then two, alternating the whole length. The rosettes are drawn loosely enough that no two match exactly. A cream key-fret band frames the field, and outside it a camel border carries a scrolling vine.
Surviving pairs are the uncommon part. Runners of this kind were often made in twos for a hall or a staircase, and a pair is easily split up over a century of ownership, so a set still together is the harder thing to find. Both have worn at the same rate.
Each measures 2 ft 9 in by 11 ft 8 in — narrow enough for a corridor and long enough to run most of one. Having two lets a hall and a landing be treated as one scheme. Price is available on request, and the design can be rewoven to your own lengths as a custom rug.
