Beautiful Geometric Antique Persian Malayer Rug, Country of Origin: Persia, Circa Date: 1900s
A column of dark navy diamonds runs up the centre of a pale sand ground, each one filled with a floral tracery too fine to read from standing height and finished top and bottom with a stepped finial. Flanking them, triangular panels of small rust and brown flowers fill the space out to the sides, so the open sand survives mainly along the centre line.
The rug works by alternating dense and open rather than by covering everything. Weaving of this kind more often runs one allover repeat edge to edge; splitting the field into filled panels and bare ground is what keeps this one calm over its length. A camel border of small flowers closes it without competing.
At 5 ft 4 in by 11 ft 10 in it is long and fairly narrow. Among the neutral rugs it is one of the quietest, and it will sit under furniture without pulling the eye down. Price is available on request, and the drawing can be rewoven at other dimensions as a custom rug.
