Antique Spanish Rugs — Art Deco Spanish Carpet, 1920’s – Antique Spanish carpets bear eloquent testimony to the rich cultural heritage of the Iberian peninsula. This magnificent example displays a staggered area rug design pattern of rich saffron palmettes going back to Umayyad sources. The delicate green leafy scrolls enclosing each palmette are western or European in derivation, as is the vine scroll border, whose green color and fine drawing echo the scrolls of the field. Yet the impressive unity of the whole design comes not only from the similarities between the field and border, but also from the soft champagne ground that graces the entire carpet.
