Antique Oversized Israeli Bezalel Carpet, Origin: Israel, Circa: First Quarter of the Twentieth Century – Here is a magnificent antique rug – an antique Bezalel rug that was woven in Israel during the early decades of the twentieth century. Featuring a clever and beautifully executed pattern of overlapping shapes, this Bezalel rug, rich with Judaica symbols, is an intriguing piece. Its soft palate and monumental size underscores its uniqueness. Framed by a relatively narrow border of a soft and beautifully faded shade of red and decorated with small floral details, the field of this carpet is certainly its dominant element. From corner to corner, the repeating pattern of medallion figures gives the carpet a rich impression of strength and solidity. The soft colors utilized throughout complement one another while also creating energy through subtle shifts in contrast.

Woven into the medallion shapes of the field are various Judaica design elements and symbols, from depictions of the Torah, to Menorahs, to depictions of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, making this carpet an especially rich Jewish artwork. Measuring nearly 16 by 18 feet, this Bezalel carpet is one of the largest examples known to exist anywhere in the world. An exceptionally rich and beautiful carpet, this antique Bezalel rug from Jerusalem in Israel is a stunning and truly peerless example.

This is an extremely rare piece for a number of reasons. First and foremost, Bezalel rugs from the early 20th century are few and far between. There weren’t many made as the course for rug weaving and design was not offered / open to a large number of students. Secondly, this is by far the largest one we have come across (almost all the pieces are smaller than 9 x 12). In and of themselves, the antique Israeli Bezalel rugs are quite collectible as there are very few textile and rug options for high end Judaica collectors.

The design and overall artistic impact is far more prevalent when viewed in person. Since the Bezalel rug is so large, it is difficult to see it’s scale in the image.  It is in excellent condition and could take daily traffic and use with no problem.

People who are buying rugs for their home and want one of the very best rugs of it’s kind, this piece would be hard to top. Area rugs like this that are both highly collectible and rare are exciting when they are finally discovered.
