Antique Khotan Oriental Rug, early twentieth century At times the carpets of East Turkestan relate more to Middle Eastern carpets than to those of China and Tibet, as in the case of this elegant Khotan. Large arabesque-like medallions with floral sprays or space-fillers dominate the deep cinnamon field, enclosed by palmette borders. Still, the relative spareness of the composition, the geometric drawing, and the reserved cool palette distinguish this as a Khotan piece, as does the lustrous soft wool of the pile.
