Continental Textile, early twentieth century
Designed in the French Aubusson tradition with its delicate painterly drawing and soft coloration, this elegant textile depicts a Venetian cityscape in the manner of painters like Canaletto. In the distance across the lagoon we see Piazza San Marco with the Palace of the Doges, A gondola approaches the quay where a young nobleman in Renaissance dress courts a lady, attended by her servant. The delicacy of the drawing goes hand in hand with the gentle tonality and the aristocratic subject matter.
