Antique Shirvan Rug, Caucasus, circa 1900 - This outstanding Shirvan rug features a variety of Kazak dragon motifs and charming protection symbols woven in a formal composition. Each notched medallion is decorated with sandikli motifs symbolizing a trousseau or dowry chest, which are worked around central fretted dragon motifs. Secondary dragon motifs with in-facing latchhooks decorate the dark field along with minute crosses and protection symbols against the evil eye. Charming borders decorated with geometric star motifs frame this unique Shirvan rug.
