Khotan Rug, East Turkestan, Circa 1900 - Antique Khotans like this are known for their eclectic blend of Central Asian and Chinese design traditions. Here the Field has a classic Tekke Turkoman design of octagonal medallions or 'Guls' linked by an allover linear grid, with secondary cruciform motifs in the intervening spaces. The inner borders, in contrast are Chinese, while the outer one with its pomegranate design is classic Yarkand or Khotan. The overall impression is remarkably unified and decorative despite its eclectic origins, no doubt because of the soft consistent palette used throughout the composition.
